Why give to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence?

Despite spectacular progress in understanding addiction as a chronic disease that takes place in the human brain, a great deal of people has a preconceived prejudicial belief that this disease is self-inflicted. This stigma is entrenched in our society and dramatically effects the funding of prevention and treatment. Fundraising for projects such as sexually transmitted diseases and animal rights often exceed efforts to prevent drug and alcohol use in elementary schools.

NCADD has been a leader in prevention of alcohol and drug use and abuse and addiction since 1964 and nationally since 1944. The agency has been financially alive because of donations from the recovery community and family members of individuals in recovery, but this has been minimal support. We have not been able to reach large philanthropic organizations and educate them about the disease of addiction and our needs to prevent the devastating effects on our communities. Alaska has one of the highest per capita drinking rates in the United States and this, along with drug abuse, is considered the most influential factor in our health status. Drug use inflicts a great deal of pain on our families, communities and companies doing business here. We are the only state that has cancer as the leading cause of death over heart disease due to our use of nicotine products. Our high rate of crime is directly related to drug and especially alcohol abuse.

We hope you can take the time to view our website at www.ncaddjuneau.org and support our efforts to prevent these tragedies from continuing. Please consider us in your giving plan. Thank you for your time and consideration.
