Message from the Executive Director

The Juneau affiliate of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence has been providing prevention and intervention services in the state capitol since 1965. We are one of the oldest nonprofit agencies in the area, and our longevity makes for an incredible story.

Unfortunately, programs that provide prevention, treatment, and support to families and individuals suffering from addiction rarely receive charitable aid. A great deal of stigma and misunderstanding about addictive diseases persist, and those long-standing, persistent prejudices prove resistant to new knowledge and understanding of addiction as a physical disease. The strength of these prejudices may be abating among people interested in newer research, but misunderstanding among the general population continues today.

The few contributions to agencies like NCADD-Juneau are usually made by grateful families that have survived an addictive disorder, but public contributions remain small. However, public or corporate funding is critical for NCADD-Juneau. This funding can be used to meet the matching requirements of government grants and contracts. As a prevention agency, we do not have the the fee income generated from direct services like treatment agencies do; yet we are the agency first called upon for help.

As the region’s main intervention agency with a statewide hot line, we receive the first call from family, friends, and individuals in need of direction. They will tell you that it took courage to make that call. It is critical that the response to these first calls provides hope and direction. Absent this response, a second call may never be made.

NCADD-Juneau could not have survived the many years it has without grants and contracts for support. We now need to increase our charitable support to solidify our efforts going forward. Please consider our agency in your tax deductible contributions annually. Our financial information, including our latest independent audit, can be found here. We also have an extensive listing on Guidestar.

If we can provide any additional information that can help you help us, please feel free to call or come in and see one of us.

Thank you for your consideration.
