TATU

Who We Are

Teens Against Tobacco Use (TATU) is a national, student-led tobacco education and prevention group. TATU Juneau – which consists of student from both the Juneau-Douglas and Thunder Mountain high schools – seeks to address the “tobacco epidemic” by promoting positive, informational interaction between teenagers, younger children, and the general public. Teens are encouraged to focus their talents and energy to educate the public on first- and second-hand smoke hazards and to serve as role models and advocates of tobacco control in the community.

What We Do

While we are known primarily for the famous Pig Lung demonstrations we provide the school district’s six elementary schools, TATU Juneau continually strives to have a deeper, more lasting impact on the community. With this in mind, our student-leaders make themselves available for health fairs and various other public days of action, taking every opportunity to aid in the community’s understanding of tobacco’s harmful effects. TATU’s student-leaders have also been instrumental in promoting the passage of clean air legislation, most recently helping spread the word about Proposition #2. In addition, TATU has sponsored several print, radio, and television ad campaigns aimed at dispelling the myths surrounding tobacco use and its attendant dangers.

In addition to these activities, we undertake two major initiatives every year – the Great American Smoke Out (GASO) in November and Kick Butts Day (KBD) in March. This past KBD was a success as we erected our 3rd annual Memorial Wall to commemorate those who have succumbed to tobacco-related diseases. True to form, the Juneau-Douglas community responded to our solicitations for submissions warmly. And look for our annual GASO Postering Event this November, showcasing the artistic endeavors of Juneau’s elementary school students as they illustrate – literally – the dangers of tobacco use.
